When I was a young child growing up in the eighties, we always had an advent calendar. It was thick paper often with a religious scene. Each door revealed a secret treasure, like a small picture of a horn or goat. Now I’d only get to open a door every other day, because odd days belonged to my brother. I’d about burst awaiting the great reveal… could it be a wreath , a silver bell, or even baby Jesus himself hiding behind that tiny door? Those were simpler times when a tiny picture of a wreath was enough for an 8 year old.

After my own children losing interest in the tiny paper doors, we moved on to chocolate advent calendars from Trader Joe’s or Aldi. Last year was a big upgrade to a Lego Friends’ calendar.
